In 1989, New York City mandated paper recycling in an effort to curb the overall environmental costs of paper consumption and to divert waste from landfills. Less than a decade later, Pratt Industries opened its 100% Recycled Paper Mill in Staten Island.
Today, post-consumer waste paper from all 5 boroughs is picked up by the NYC Department of Sanitation from homes across New York City. Around 700 tons of the recovered fiber is then delivered daily by barge and trucks to Pratt’s 100% Recycled Paper Mill.
On average, Pratt Staten Island consumes 1200 tons of waste paper per day to produce 1050 tons of 100% recycled paper or around 400 rolls.
While 10% of the new paper remains on-site to supply Pratt’s Staten Island Corrugator, the rest is shipped regionally to be made into new products, including corrugated sheets, packaging and displays from Pratt’s various manufacturing facilities across the country.
When consumers and businesses are done with these corrugated products, we hope to see them again as part of the recovered materials brought via barge and truck to Staten Island or to one of Pratt’s 19 recycling facilities and six 100% recycled paper mills across the U.S.
